Winter is here. Meaning cold temperatures, hot showers, harsh winds and central heating are wreaking havoc on your skin. Tight, dry, flaky or sensitive skin is probable, so to help ensure your complexion is hydrated and protected this winter, we’ve put together our top tips and best products for healthy and happy skin during the cooler months.
Without a doubt winter means for many, the perpetual state of severely dry, cracked and painful lips. The skin of the lips is extremely thin (some of the thinnest on our body) and lips have very few oil glands to keep lubricated and moisturised. This, combined with the cold air of winter causes lips to dry out and then peel and crack.
The first step to soft lips is a good exfoliation, as no product will penetrate properly until surface skin is sloughed, we suggest a gentle buffing with a baby toothbrush in circular motions or a swipe of Cane & Austin Miracle Pads after you’ve applied to the rest of your face. Follow with NUXE’s ultra-nourishing lip balm to prevent and repair chapping, it will seal in moisture and form a protective barrier. Be sure you regularly apply during the day and apply a generous layer at night, to help repair damage while you sleep.
Serious about SPF
While SPF is an integral step in your routine during summer, it is just as vital to continue wearing a layer of protection well past summer. As any dermatologist will tell you, the need to protect your skin against UV damage is a year around commitment.
In winter, we get more UV exposure than we anticipate ‘incidental sun exposure’ that penetrates through grey clouds, comes in through windows and gets you in the car on your daily commute. UV rays are present all year around, and has a cumulative effect resulting in fine lines, sagging skin, and dark spots. It is unquestionable that you should be applying sun care every day of the year.
Come winter, moisturising serums are essential. Whilst we recommend a hydrating serum all year around, these potent yet featherweight elixirs not only offer an extra dose of hydration, they also help protect again the harsh elements of winter.
NIOD's MMHC is our favourite hydrating serum, which we apply religiously day and night is incredibly lightweight yet intensely powerful. It deeply penetrates the skin to hydrate and help skin surface look plump, elastic, comfortable and uniform. Bioderma Hydrabio is a heavier formula and feels incredible on dehydrated skin, it intensely moisturises and strengthens the skin and give you that 'dewy' glow. And as a luxurious and 100% organic alternative, Josh Rosebrooks Active infusion Serum is deeply potent and formulated to balance, clear and support skin health with a good boost of powerful hydration.
Exfoliation is Essential
Regardless of the weather, exfoliation is always important. However, because the winter weather makes things extra dry, exfoliating several times a week during colder months is necessary. Regular exfoliation will slough off dead skin cells and get rid of excess dirt that your cleanser won’t remove, all while making room for fresh cells to grow. It will also help skin to better absorb serums and moisturisers, which is especially important in the cooler months.
Your skin is more prone to dryness, redness and wind burn in winter, so the trick is in how you exfoliate and how often you do it. Try to exfoliate less frequently and always make sure you’re replacing hydration on the skin. Exfoliating with a gentle acid is far more effective and kind on the skin rather than beaded scrubs that often scratch the skins surface. We love Cane & Austin’s Miracle Pads which are developed with Glycolic Acid which penetrate the skin deeply, breaking down dead skin cells. They are gentle enough for sensitive skin and effective enough to help with acne, fine lines, oiliness and dullness, working to improve skin health over time.
Winterfy your Moisturiser
Now is the time to swap out your lighter lotions for a weightier moisturiser. Cold temperatures and harsh heating call for rich and nourishing barrier creams, that are formulated to protect from these external factors and seal the moisture in.
Nourishing creams like NUXE, Bioderma & Embryolisse are French pharmacy cabinet classics and are all rich in essential fatty acids and vitamins. Taking it up a notch is NIOD's Hydration Vaccine which acts like a seal, supporting the skin's own barrier to water loss as well as working to keep moisture levels high and environmental factors in check.
Last but not least is the Rolls Royce of intensely hydrating Moisturisers, Josh Rosebrook’s Vital Balm Cream, which is an all-natural hybrid product that has the strength of a powerfully hydrating balm yet the weight of a lighter cream, meaning it absorbs beautifully into the skin rather than sitting on the surface. This heavy duty hydrator gives a distinctive cocoon like protection, with a surprisingly airy almost whipped texture. Unquestionably your skins best friend this winter!
Introduce a Mist
There are water sprays, there are mists, there are floral essences and then there are these two incredible hydration heroes that not only feel soothing and refreshing to spritz all over your face, but are also packed with active and powerful ingredients that work wonders for your skin. An indulgent and delightful step in your routine, and one that we highly recommend.
NIOD’s SDS Mist is a powerhouse mist, which hero ingredient ‘Superoxide Dismutase’ is an enzyme that acts as an anti-ageing daily defence that protects skin from oxidative stress, prevents water loss and reduces inflammation as well as boosting hydration in skin by 35%. Spritz this superior, multi-tasking mist after cleansing morning and night (and through the day) to help skin stay protected, plump and dewy.
For a luxurious and organic option, Josh Rosebrook’s Hydrating Accelerator is a hydrator, toner and light moisturiser all in one, to help plump, firm and increase circulation of vital nutrients for the skin. It also helps calm and relieve redness in the skin… and the smell is nothing short of heavenly. Spray after cleansing, over serums, under serums, over makeup, under makeup, wherever and whenever.
It’s important not to neglect your body this winter, your limbs will require some TLC too. Be sure to keep up with regular exfoliation and hydration. Cane and Austin’s refreshing face and body cleanser gives you an at home body treatment that deeply exfoliates whilst delivering essential hydration leaving skin clear and buffed. If you’re feeling extremely dry and flaky opt for a more intense exfoliation and swipe your limbs with the Body Retexture pads, which will penetrate into the thicker skin on the body, breaking down dead skin cells and eliminating dullness. Follow up with a good dose of hydration, whilst skin is still wet from your shower or bath slather on NUXE oil or Leonor Greyl’s Magnolia Oil that is not only deeply hydrating but smells truly heavenly. If your skin is extra thirsty follow up with NUXE Reve de Miel Body Cream, that is nourishing, hydrating and soothing.
