NEW YEAR SKIN...BACK TO BASICS

And just like that.. 2019 is in full swing. The start of a new year marks the perfect time to set new intentions and shift daily routines including how we take care of our skin. Like us, our skin appreciates change. Product efficacy plateaus and our skins needs’ evolve.

Without over complicating things and wondering where to start, the best place to go- is back to basics. Maintaining a daily routine, with the occasional introduction of new products and ingredients, is the best way to keep your skin at its very best.

Below we outline the staples of a well-rounded approach to help you take care of your skin this year.

Vitamin C

A key skincare ingredient with multiple benefits is Vitamin C. If you’re not using one already- now is the time. A potent antioxidant packed with collagen Vitamin C will help brighten, firm and protect the skin from free radical damage. Best used as part of a morning routine to boost skin’s protection throughout the day.

Cleanse Properly

Cleaning skin properly in the evening is a must for a clear healthy complexion. Try introducing a double cleanse to ensure the days build-up of make-up, SPF, and pollution is thoroughly removed and skin effectively cleansed. Often a single foam or cream cleanse won’t remove all the dirt from pores, so a follow up with a water based micellar solution  will ensure all the grime is gone- leaving skin cleansed and prepped for serums to follow.

Peel It Off

Regular cell turnover is vital for a fresh and healthy looking complexion. As we age, our cell turnover diminishes, meaning a build of dead skin sits on the surface- resulting in a congested, dull and uneven appearance. Exfoliation and peels help speed up the turnover process. We recommend keeping it to 2-3 times a week- you don’t want to over exfoliate and disrupt the skins natural balance. Try incorporating an acid based peel pad, or gentle scrub - AM or PM.

TIP: Try a peel pad pre makeup application for a smooth finish and added glow.

HYDRATE

Every single skin type can benefit from added hydration. Oily, dry, you name it- skin hydration is something to be considered on a daily basis be it with a hydrating serum, moisturiser or balm. Optimal hydration levels help the skin function as it should- meaning most skin concerns can be tackled at some level via additional hydration. Remember Hydrated skin is healthy skin.

Retinol

One of the best skincare ingredients on the market- Why? Because it tackles everything; from large pores, fine lines and wrinkles, pigmentation, acne and breakouts, and dull sullen complexions. Retinol works to regulate cell turnover of dead skin meaning new fresh cells rise the surface and at a deeper level- increase collagen production. Retinol should be a staple in your skincare regime from mid-late 20s onwards. Introduce slowly and build up to more regular use. We recommend 2-4 times a week, in the evening, followed by a moisturising cream.

Tip: always ensure wearing SPF while using retinol as it will increase skins sensitivity to the sun.

Protect

It goes without saying- protection should be the number 1 priority when it comes to skincare. The golden rule- wear SPF every day. Sun exposure can have very damaging effects on the skin, resulting in premature ageing, sun spots and pigmentation. Sunscreen with 40-50+ SPF is best. Layer underneath foundation or wear a tinted BB Cream on its own. Your future skin will thank you.

It’s that simple- beauty truly can be seen from the inside out. Nutrients you ingest, hydration, exercise, sleep and how you manage stress, can all have enormous effects on your appearance. Glowing skin, lustrous hair, clear eyes and healthy digestion all come down to better lifestyle choices.
