Also referred to as “Indian Ginseng”, and “Winter Cherry”, Ashwagandha is a centuries old natural root powder considered one of the most beneficial super herbs for women in Ayurveda practice. Ashwagandha is touted for its ability to reduce anxiety, boost mood, balance hormones, promote good sleep, eliminate brain fog and strengthen the body against stress.. and these are only a handful of benefits. The list in fact goes on.
Personally- I can vouch for this hardworking adaptogen as being a true support system on my wellbeing, particularly in balancing my body’s ability to mediate stress…and I know I’m not alone here.
When our bodies encounter stress- be it a looming deadline, emotional anxiety, intense exercise or even sitting in traffic, our adrenal glands get the signal its GO TIME. Our adrenal system is what regulates stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol. When these hormones are released, the body goes into “fight or flight”, meaning key senses are heightened and other bodily functions seize (not good) while you deal with ‘threat’ at hand.

‘Fight or Flight’ is a response engrained in human beings since our cavemen ancestors, however we have swapped out the threat of a lion, to the mundane daily stressors of modern existence, which we can likely all agree never really turn off. Chronic exposure to these stress hormones can have major effects on your health and mental wellbeing.
For me, the small things stress me out- daily. I’m always rushing, can be foggy headed, tense, easily irritated and overwhelmed, which has had a negative effect on my wellbeing. Reducing some of these unnecessary stressors has been a vital step in a journey of balance, and this is where Ashwagandha comes in.
I have religiously been taking this super herb daily, be it in a warm spicy cacao, a turmeric latte or a tonic before bed to help with my sleep, I have been diligent with ensuring just a ½ tsp portion a day.
Anytime you introduce something new into your diet, it takes time for your body to adapt, so effects of this herb didn’t happen overnight. However, with use, I have truly noticed a sense of calm. Tasks are becoming more seamless, unnecessary stress has dissipated, I have a sense of clarity and balance, and overall..increased happiness. Whilst mindfulness is also playing a part in my practice, my daily dose of Ashwagandha has undoubtedly had its effect.
In recent studies its has been claimed Ashwagandha can help reduce anxiety by up to 44 per cent, and this alone can be a huge support on enhancing overall immune function, hormonal balance, sleep quality and general well-being. One study in particular, participants who took Ashwagandha for 60 days lowered their cortisol levels by almost 30 percent.
Ashwagandha has also been said to be as effective as some prescription anti-anxiety and anti-depressant drugs.

And trust me- I’m not the only fan. It takes a quick google search to see the universal praise on this powerful herb, including from some of the best integrative medical professionals in the world.
Adding an adaptogen like Ashwagandha to your daily routine is a great way to naturally mediate stress and therefore improve on your health and function. Sunpotion live by the moto- a small amount daily, for a long period of time. So consistency here is key. Introduce Ashwagandha into your smoothies, your teas or tonics and gradually support your body to find the balance we all so desperately need!
